Despite major advances in science and technology in the world, extreme poverty and economic inequality persist at alarming levels. Half of the world’s people live on less than $2.50 per day and more than 800 million go hungry every day as a result of poverty. Poverty is pervasive, multi-faceted and inextricably linked to environmental degradation and violence. It is not that people living in poverty are more violent or care for the environment less, but that security and environmental sustainability are hindered by the societal conditions surrounding poverty.
At Ahmsa, we don’t see poverty as simply a lack of monetary wealth. After all, monetary wealth has never been synonymous to human fulfillment and well-being. For Ahmsa, poverty represents a lack of opportunities, a lack of community (social capital) and the inability to fulfill basic needs. In short, poverty is a moral stain on human progress. Join us as we explore creative methods for removing it from the planet.
